Black Police Pulp Covers
By John Newton Howitt
John Newton Howitt’s powerful pulp covers appear in The Spider Vs. The Empire State, but only in black and white. We are excited to be able to show these vibrant works in color here on ageofaces.net.
The October 1938 issue, “The Spider at Bay,” was on stands while the first Spider serial, The Spider’s Web, was being filmed, so it turns up in Web photography and promotional material, which we are also including here. The last picture is a random archival photo of a newsstand — that just happens to have the 11/38 issue of The Spider in the middle of the racks.
